Response to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s decision to ban owner Donald Sterling from the NBA:
In response to owner Donald Sterling’s audio remarks pertaining to African Americans, it’s disturbing to hear such racist remarks from an NBA franchise owner that has African American players and staff apart of his organization. Although his statements appear to be very unprofessional and racist, I believe that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver should have not have disciplined him as such. Yes for banning him from future NBA events and No for fining him $2.5 million dollars.
Owner Donald Sterling was in fact having a private conversation with his significant other, expressing his own opinions, when someone decided to record it and use it against him. It’s entrapment. “If you and I were having a conversation in private about your boss and someone had hidden a voice recorder and recorded your opinions about your boss and let him hear it and later he fired you, you will feel as though you were entrapped.
“ In the situation with Mr. Sterling, I feel it was an invasion of privacy. I’m not saying his remarks are acceptable. If Mr. Sterling had spoken out publicly regarding his opinions about African Americans, then I feel it to be necessary for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to take such action.
We, African Americans are faced with racism and criticism every day of our lives; from our actions in society to the roles we play on films/television, from receiving an education to obtaining employment, from getting pay raises to promotions. Whites receive a better education; they get better jobs, receive better pay, get quicker promotions and live in better neighborhoods than African Americans. We are quick to fight to get Mr. Sterling out of the NBA, but not quick to fight for equality and social justice here in America. If the fight to get Mr. Sterling out of the NBA is more important than fighting for equality and social justice, then racism towards African Americans in school, the workplace, film and neighborhoods will remain a major problem in American Society.
